Description
Job DescriptionPost-doctoral Adaptive Optics Research Fellow
Seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral Adaptive Optics Research Fellow to work with Dr. Osamah Saeedi at the University of Maryland and in collaboration with Drs. Zhuolin Liu and Daniel X. Hammer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Center for Devices and Radiological Health. The candidate will perform research with the FDA multimodal adaptive optics (mAO) imagers with a focus on retinal blood flow and glaucoma. The mAO imaging systems allow visualization of the living human retina at the level of single cells. Candidates from a broad set of backgrounds will be considered for this position. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to multiple ongoing investigations into structural and functional imaging of the retinal cells. The candidate will be expected to: conduct human imaging in healthy and diseased eyes, perform data processing, analysis and presentation, upgrade AO imagers, fabricate AO model eyes, and assess imaging quality and performance of AO-enhanced ophthalmic devices.
The well-equipped FDA labs contain several different AO and OCT imagers and are an ideal work environment for a self-starting post-doctoral fellow to make an impact on public health. The candidate will have opportunity to work with several collaborators at NIH NEI and other clinical and academic sites to develop tools and approaches to accelerate the translation of AO imaging technology to wide-spread clinical use. The candidate will be also expected to provide analysis support for collaborative team members.
Qualifications
An ambitious, motivated and independent scientist with a Ph.D. in optics, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline is sought. An ideal candidate will have experience with adaptive optics, optical coherence tomography, optical imaging or ophthalmoscopy. Programming experience with MATLAB, C++, and/or LabVIEW is desirable. Experience with image analysis software, such as ImageJ is also desired. Previous experience with adaptive optics optical coherence tomography and/or scanning light ophthalmoscopy would be optimal but is not required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, technical expertise, attention to detail, and scientific and engineering creativity are essential.
