Description
Job DescriptionAVAILABLE POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN VAGINAL MICROBIOME GROUP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, INSTITUTE FOR GENOME SCIENCES
An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Johanna Holm, PhD, at the Institute for Genome Sciences, University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Holm's laboratory is focused on translating the vaginal microbiome to clinical applications for the improvement of women's health outcomes. The laboratory is specifically interested in improving diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis and developing novel treatments to reduce recurrence using high-throughput, multi-omic sequencing data and comparative genomics. The lab aims to define a mechanistic understanding of the vaginal microbiome in relation to bacterial vaginosis.
The successful candidate will primarily investigate the functional role of the vaginal microbiome in the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis using bioinformatic and statistical analyses on large, multi-omic datasets (metagenomes, metabolomes, immunological data). Such analyses will include training in multi-omic integration as well as genome assembly and comparisons. The successful candidate is expected to report findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed publications. There is also the opportunity to perform in-vitro validation (benchwork) of hypotheses generated through these analyses.
Qualifications
Requirements & Preferences:
- PhD in related field
- Proficient in R, Linux, and python
- Possess a working knowledge in genomic sciences (i.e., genome sequencing and data analysis) and sequencing biotechnologies (i.e., sequencing platforms)
- Experience in bioinformatic analysis of metagenomes (such as metagenome-assembled genomes, comparative genomics, functional annotation of metagenomes)
- Lead or participate in writing research and review papers, and to contribute the peer-review process and grant writing
- Experience in or willingness to learn grid computing
- Experience in or willingness to learn clinical outcomes related statistics
- Experience in molecular- and microbiology (such as bacterial cultivation, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR)
- Interest in women's genital health and the vaginal microbiome
- PI highly values individuals with passion in taking on new challenges. A fresh graduate is also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will benefit from a community of interactive research labs, bioinformatics experts and a variety of sequencing, and computational resources available in a world-class institute dedicated to genomic, basic, and translational research to improve human health in IGS at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine.
To apply, please send a CV, a statement of research interests (1 page maximum), and contact information for three references to Dr. Johanna Holm, Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, Institute for Genome Sciences. Email: [email protected].
Additional inquiries about the position can be sent to Dr. Johanna Holm ([email protected]).
Consideration of candidates will begin upon receipt of applications and will continue until the position is filled.
