University ofMaryland Emergency Medicine - Ultrasound Fellowship

The Department of Emergency Medicine at theUniversity of Maryland Medical Center established a fellowship in emergencymedicine ultrasound in 2005. Ours is one of approximately 20 such fellowshipsacross the country. While our fellowship follows the national model, we placeparticular emphasis on teaching skills. Thus, one of focal points of thefellowship is participation in the Teaching Fellowship Program offered by theAmerican College of Emergency Medicine. This 12-day, two-session program isheld in Dallas and focuses on curriculum development, teaching methods,evaluation, academic survival skills, administration, and management. Thefellow applies the lessons learned from this program to many teachingopportunities throughout the year involving medical students, residents, andfaculty.

Another focal point of the fellowship ispreparation for and ultimately obtaining registrant status from the AmericanRegistry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. To achieve this certification, thefellow must:

• Completemore than 800 ultrasound examinations
• Engagein self and proctored study
• Attenda national review course
• Passtwo comprehensive examinations

The remainder of the fellowship year is spenton research, quality assurance, and the practice of general emergency medicine.Our Ultrasound Fellows will receive a faculty appointment in the Department ofEmergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and beexpected to complete and/or participate in: Clinical shifts, scanning shifts,research project, resident and medical student education, grand roundspresentation, assistance in fellowship development and ultrasound programdevelopment and residency interviews.

By the completion of the fellowship, thephysician is an experienced RDMS-certified physician, ready to assume aleadership role in a university- or community-based emergency ultrasoundprogram.
